THE EDITOR, Madam:
IT SEEMS almost that history threatens to repeat itself, as in the 1930's Hitler's Germany sought to annex Chezchoslo-vakia and to divide Europe through deception, in order to achieve his evil goal.
Guyana is threatened, today, on two sides of its frontier, with two countries laying claim to its territory. On the west is Venezuela, which claims the Essequibo region of Guyana, and on the eastern frontier is Suriname. Though the parallel with Nazi Germany may be only vague, it is relevant.
Venezuela seems to have cleverly driven a rift between CARICOM states, offering oil at favourable rates which obviously was intended to create division, and disunity. Suriname, which happens to be a member state of CARICOM, brazenly entered Guyana's sovereign waters to interrupt economic activity.
Is Suriname, (a former Dutch colony) a 'Trojan Horse' in CARICOM? Does it really abide by the spirit of CARICOM? Which is to facilitate easier trade, and a reduction of barriers between CARICOM states.
If Venezuela carries out its threats to the 'extreme', along with Suriname, not much will be left of Guyana, maybe some shoreline, if they are lucky.
I am etc.,
