MAY PEN, Clarendon:
TWENTY-TWO top performers in the 2000 Grade Six Achieve-ment Test (GSAT) from Claren-don were awarded five years scholarships to the high schools they are now attending.
Each student was selected from a different primary or all-age school.
The scholarships will cover school fees and text books over a five-year period. The awards were made by the new Clarendon North Central Scholarship Trust, and financing was provided by Member of Parliament George Lin and private sector donors.
The official launch of the scholarship trust was held at Rockridge Resort in Mocho.
According to Mr. Lin, its main aim is to provide a safety net for the brightest of the constituency's children at the GSAT level.
The 22 scholarship recipients were recommended by their respective schools, based on the GSAT results. The student with the highest average in the exam was recommended for the scholarship.
Another 55 persons and three institutions in the constituency received certificates of appreciation for service to the community. The awards were made in the fields of religion, security, community development, education, local government, music and entertainment.
Mayor of May Pen, Minnie Clarke, was special guest at the function in the absence of the Minister of Tourism and Sport, Portia Simpson Miller, who was slated to be the guest of honour.
