A technical solution to carjackings

THE EDITOR, Madam:

RECENTLY IN our country there has been an increase in the numbers of hijackings of motor cars, and the killing of their owners if anything goes wrong. This seems to be following a worldwide trend throughout many countries in the developed and the developing world.

There is a company in the US which has developed a technological solution to diminish this problem. A locating device is pre-installed in a secret location in cars at the owner's expense. This locating transmitting device is radio-controlled and can be turned on by the police by a radio signal. This device uses a global positioning satellite to locate itself and hence the car. It then broadcasts this location to the police who can then come and retrieve the car, and its occupants, if any.

If the car hijacking fraternity knew that we have such a system operating in Jamaica, and that they could be caught in flagrante delictu is it not possible that we may experience a reduction in this growth industry?

I am, etc.,

Concerned Citizen
