A dedicated athlete

Veronica Campbell

AFTER MINING medals in the Carifta, Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Juniors, the Olympic Games and the just concluded World Junior Championships, 18-year-old Veronica Campbell now has her sight set on the World Championships to be held in Edmonton, Canada, next year.

After her return from the World Junior Championships in Chile, where she garnered the historic sprint double in national and meet record times of 11.12 and 22.87 seconds, Campbell said that her aim for next year is to reap similar successes at the World Championships.

By next year, the former Vere Technical student should at least be running below 11.1 and 22.8 seconds in the 100m and 200m respectively.

Team manager of the Jamaican World Junior team and member of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association, Ian Forbes described Campbell as an athlete who "is very determined, disciplined and focused ... who knows exactly what she wants. And if she continues all the way she will make it to the top of the seniors as well".

Campbell hails from Trelawny and captured the first World Youth 100m title in 11.49 in Poland last year.

"It takes a lot of training, dedication and determination because you have to know how to run the rounds so that when you reach the finals you are not so tired," Campbell said, describing how she works for success.

She wants to pursue a career in accounting.
