THE EDITOR, Madam:
I COULDN'T agree more with Professor Munroe. Even the drug dons and criminals in our society who love to think of themselves as Jamaicans, must be made to see that if "Out of Many One People," does not appeal to them now, we are going to go down as a nation.
It is certainly time for Messrs. Patterson, Seaga and Golding to put their personal agenda for power to rule this country aside and consider what is really at stake. It is time for us to realise that the war is not internal anymore, but that our continuous internal skirmishes have made us an attractive prey to be exploited as spoils for the most vicious external enemy.
Yes, we have become accustomed to the tribal war between parties because we have never had to fight an outside enemy and we love to fight. These drug lords have no allegiance to any country, they care not even about themselves and have no plans for posterity. They are here to kill, steal and destroy nations. If there is ever any doubt about the work of the devil -- here it is! These are the example of the principalities and powers against which the Bible warns that we wrestle.
We must recognise that the corruption might already be so deep, that the possibility is real that the very people we are depending on to stop it, may well be involved.
What if we could create a climate where anyone involved in drugs, guns, murder, or the worst of crime could at this point publicly repent without consequences? Providing they are willing to make relevant restitution and verifiably turn away from evil. Would that give us a breather? Wouldn't that put a spanner in the works of the drug lords who use blackmail and threats? Could we then set out a code of conduct for our country, like the National Pledge, for example, by which everyone is called to live. Could we start again please? What alternative do we have? Remember! We are Jamaicans! There is nothing that we can't overcome!
It is time to hear our national hero Marcus Garvey say: "Up you mighty race you can accomplish what you will."
I am, etc.,
