Caribbean voters and the US elections

THE EDITOR, Madam:

WE SHOULD carefully reconsider Dr. Carol Archer's article which encourages Caribbean voters in the U.S. to demonstrate their strength to Hillary Clinton and to also establish themselves as an ethnic group and vote accordingly.

Jamaicans can ill-afford to alienate any U.S. political candidate by endorsing one over the other. No. Let the American people (including those naturalised Jamaicans and others) decide who should represent them in the Congress and the White House. Jamaicans should then be able to work with the elected officials to get whatever benefit they are seeking.

People are individuals. So people should not vote as a group. Instead, they should vote as their morals dictate.

I wouldn't want any politician to assume that they know which way I will vote once they know my race, culture, etc. When that happens, both candidates will ignore me: one, because they believe I will not vote for them anyway; and the other, because they believe they have my vote regardless, so why listen to me.

I am, etc.,
