Hope for proper roads

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I NOTE the report by your newspaper that scores of people with placards some of which read (End political victimisation), (No roads, no taxes), called on Member of Parliament for the area, Donald Buchanan, to address the problem.

I am in sympathy with the residents of Salt Spring, Cottaboo, Pen, Slipe and Cashew in respect of the condition of their roadway. This road was reconstructed in 1988 and rapidly deteriorated creating the conditions of which the residents complained. The fact is, however, that in spite of efforts to maintain this roadway, due to the very poor quality of work done by the contractors in the reconstruction of this road, the efforts have proven impossible.

I have made representations to the Ministry of Transport and Works with respect to the reconstruction of the road. The Ministry is endeavouring to identify funding to reconstruct the roadway and I hope this will happen in the not too distant future. However, the real problem is the inferior quality of work which was done on this roadway in 1988. I urge the citizens to be patient as we endeavour to find the funding to give them a proper roadway.

I am, etc.,

DONALD BUCHANAN

Member of Parliament
