A solution to quell fear of Crime Stop callers

THE EDITOR, Madam:

KINDLY GRANT me the opportunity to respond to an article, 'Hi-Tech Hampers Crime Stop', published in your newspaper of October 29, 2000. It stated the concerns of callers to Crime Stop to give information because of the fear that their calls could be traceable due to improved technology such as caller ID and Star 69 (69 ).

My solution to this problem is that crimestoppers and the-powers-that-be create a number of toll-free lines accessible from any call box throughout the length and breadth of the island. This also means that more call boxes should be made availble and in areas that never ususally have them. This obviously would eliminte the chance of one's telephone number being identified and so indirectly link the caller's identity to any such calls made.

It is hoped that this simple approach will be examined so that callers can feel more confident to speak up and not to bury and condone and hide criminals and criminal activities. This is certainly not the time for criminals to be getting the psychological edge over decent law-abiding citizens.

I am etc,
