The changing face of the civil servant

WHATEVER BECAME of the nameless, faceless civil servant, sitting behind a desk piled with files, a glass of water, and a towel over his (they were usually male!) shoulder? Well, like good men everywhere he is an endangered specie! The typical year 2000 civil servant is (usually female) well dressed in uniform, complete with tailored jacket wearing a name badge, sitting (sometimes standing) behind a Pentium III computer, with a ready smile and a willingness to provide good service, promptly, courteously and efficiently.

Okay, we are not quite there yet, but we are on the way. Check out the Revenue Centre at Twickenham Park, or the National Insurance Office at Heroes Circle, or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? You will certainly find her there - they are in other government organisations, as well. You might also find some men!

Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day, but brick by brick and stone by stone, with hard work, the right attitude and perseverance, we'll get there!
