Bridge

JAMAICAN International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, Tony Bridge, died at his home yesterday at 7:30 a.m.

Bridge OBE, who was appointed an IOC member in 1973, was 79 and the eighth most senior member of that organisation.

From 1946 until his death, Bridge was the chairman and managing director of Novelty Trading Company Limited.

His involvement in sport was wide ranging and included stints as the vice-president of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control (1947-62), president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (1954-62), Jamaica Olympic Association (1958-77), vice-president of the Jamaica Rifle Association (1960-62), first vocal of the Pan-American Sports Organisation (1971-75) and vice chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation (1974-82).

Educated at Wolmer's, Bridge was also a life member of the National Rifle Association (US), National Small Bore Rifle Association (UK), National Geographic Society (US), Royal Life-Saving Society (UK), West India Committee (UK), Jamaica Automobile Association, a charter member of the Rotary Club of Kingston and a member of the Kingston Cricket Club.

The president of the Jamaica Olympic Association, Mike Fennell, could not be reached for a comment as he was said to be off the island while secretary general of the JOA, Teddy McCook, was out of office.
