No new ground broken

THE EDITOR, Madam:

A RECENT letter "Breaking New Ground" published in The Sunday Gleaner is misleading in that it gives the impression that Mike Henry's challenge to Edward Seaga for leadership of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) at the party's conference recently, is the first time that such challenge has taken place.

Firstly, at the 1974 conference of the JLP at which conference Mr. Seaga was, for the first time, nominated for leadership of the party as a result of the prior resignation of Hugh Shearer as leader of the JLP, Wilton Hill was nominated from the floor of conference by Mr. Maragh of South West St. Andrew.

The result of that contest was that Mr. Seaga won. Secondly, in 1978 Mike Henry was nominated to run against Seaga for leadership of the JLP.

Again the result was that Mr. Seaga won. Therefore the defeat of Mr. Henry by Mr. Seaga at this year's conference was the third time that Mr. Seaga has been challenged for leader of the JLP during the past 26 years.

I am, etc.,

P. STEPHENS,

General Secretary, JLP
