THE EDITOR, Madam:
LET ME take the opportunity to thank the Jamaican Gleaner, especially the Cornwall Edition, for publishing the lovely article "Scholarships Galore". I do think that this concerted effort by everyone involved in this first Cornwall County College Fair will develop into a very worthwhile activity whereby deserving students with outstanding aptitude for the academics will not be left behind.
As a student from Jamaica, I know that our educational background and the rigidness of our learning system, set us off from many students in this country (the United States). This is being stated without showing any disrespect to anyone.
I plan to continue this effort and to obtain more scholarships for the ensuing school year. Because of several unforeseen variables over which we had very little or no control, we had to cut our field trip short of our original plan.
However, plans are being made to complete the rest of the trip by mid-February, 2001.
Plans are under way for other visits by some of the Colleges and Universities to launch an even larger event in the Kingston (eastern Jamaica) by mid-March, 2001. We hope that the students will benefit from everything and every effort that is afforded.
We must extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to Mr. Noel Sloley of Jamaica Tours. He was greatly instrumental in getting accommodation for the visitors, and above all in providing transportation for the group. Without reservations and without selfishness, he proved to be solid in his commitment to the College Fair activity. The students will benefit and are very lucky to have such fine participants interested in their well-being.
Let me not be remiss by omitting to extend our appreciation to your finest hotels and resorts that were more than gracious with their fine and wonderful accommodation.
It takes this kind of coming together to build a good foundation.
