Marc A. Cornwall MARC A. Cornwall knows that the only road to success is the one labelled diligence. He also knows that to reorder the society and make it better, there must be greater communication at all levels - at home, at school, work, in government.
With this in mind, Marc has carved a path for himself that will cause him to apply these principles he defines as important. The 18-year-old deputy head boy of Meadowbrook High School in St. Andrew recently expressed his concerns to the president and members of the Kiwanis Club of North St. Andrew when they visited the school to make a presentation of $20,000.00 to Marc to assist him in preparing for his final exams.
Marc is the Year 2000 recipient of the Nimbrod Townsend Scholarship, awarded annually by the Kiwanians in memory of club member and educator Reverend Townsend who spent many years teaching at Meadowbrook.
Marc, the youngest of his parents two children, attended the Swallowfield All-Age School before gaining entry to Meadowbrook High. He said that school life has been challenging, but enjoyable.
Blessed with a fabulous tenor voice, he also sings in the school choir. He is a member of the School's Challenge team, the Inter School Christian Fellowship and finds time to also join the PC repair club at school in addition to the Science, Environment and Health Club.
Marc's life is not only centred around school. A member of the congregation of the Webster Memorial Church, he is an active youth worker who participates in his church activities.
Headmistress, Alice Lowe describes Marc as "exemplary in conduct and academic performance.
"He takes pride in his work, and is a most communicative student," she said. Mrs. Lowe explained that in his manifesto, prepared when he was nominated to school leadership, Marc advocated establishing a "disciplinary committee of prefects, teachers, parents, students to deal with offences effectively and efficiently."
The upper sixth form student has already earned eight subjects at the CXC level and is preparing for his Advanced Levels in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology.
He's not interested in a traditional career, however. He plans a career in astro-physics because of his interest in space science and exploration.
Previous winners of the scholarship include Antoinette Haye and Jerusha Stewart who are studying at the School of Physio-Therapy and the University of the West Indies respectively.
