Leaders follow the beat

JLP spokesperson on social development and welfare, Babsy Grange and Delano Franklyn, chief adviser to Prime Minister P.J. Patterson have something in common, their love of Meritone music. They were at the Asylum nightclub Wednesday night for a special Meritone Disco session. - Winston Sill

THE ASYLUM Nightclub attracted a quality audience on Wednesday night as a number of key political and business figures turned out and turned up the heat on the dancefloor. It was the launch of a new series of parties featuring the music of one of Jamaica's oldest music merchants, Merritone Disco.

Simply put, the music was awesome. Patrons did not see the customary Winston Blake at the turntables, but were instead exposed to the surprisingly classy vintage taste of a young selector named Craig Ross. Relying heavily on Jamaican music, Ross, who was decked out in black trench coat and buckers cap, kept the enthusiastic crowd twirling.

Public Defender Howard Hamilton was out and so were Opposition Member of Parliament Olivia 'Babsy' Grange and chief adviser to the Prime Minister Delano Franklyn. Grange and Franklyn put their political differences aside and became an enviable couple for the night.

Club owner Brian Chung took an uncustomary position on the dancefloor with Sonia Hamilton as his partner. There were many other dignitaries in the club and it looked as though everyone had a good time.

Merritone's appearance at the club every Wednesday night is part of a continuing series to present a weekly vintage music session.

Next Wednesday Meritone selectors will share turntables with Squeeze of Skyy Disco.
