New water system for St Catherine residents

RESIDENTS OF Sligoville, James Mountain, Binns Road, Cedar Valley and surrounding communities in St. Catherine are to benefit from a $75 million water supply scheme.

This was disclosed by Project Engineer at Carib Engineering Corporation Limited, Peter Clarke, when he addressed residents at a meeting held at Mt. Moreland Junior High School in St. Catherine, recently.

He said the scheme would be implemented in two phases, with the first being the construction of trunk mains to carry water up to Sligoville square. The second phase would involve the laying of pipelines.

The work will be carried out by Carib Engineering, which implements water projects on behalf of the National Water Commission (NWC).

Mr. Clarke pointed out that re-lift pumping stations had been constructed at Tulloch Spring, on the Sligoville main road, on the Sligoville/Jackson main road and at Sligoville, adding that the four stations were necessary to bring water up to Sligoville square.

"The pumps have been imported from England and they are now on site and will be installed within another week or two," he added.

Mr. Clarke also noted that in phase one, sections of the distribution line from Tulloch Spring to Sligoville would be refurbished. The work is expected to be completed by March 31.

He said that in phase two of the work to begin in April, pipelines would be laid to take water from Sligoville Square to James Mountain, Cedas, Cedar Valley, Kensington and Jackson communities. Phase two would also include the refurbishing of catchment tanks at Cedar Valley and Kensington and the erection of a 189,000 litre (50,000 gallon) storage tank.
