Freeman runs world best

LIEVIN, CANA:

JAMAICAN Michelle Freeman ran a 2001 world best 7.83 seconds to win the 60-metre hurdles at the Lievin Indoor track and field meet last night.

Freeman topped the previous world leader Glory Alozie of Nigeria in her win, while her teammate Juliet Campbell powered to another big win in the 200 metres.

Chris Williams, Jamaica's 1999 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) gold medallist, was first home in the men's 200 metres in a year's best 20.45 but was disqualified for a lane violation.

Freeman, the 1997 World Indoor champion, outfinished Alozie (7.84) for a narrow win by 0.01 seconds in the sprint hurdles, with Kazakhstan's Olga Shishigina (7.94) third.

Vonette Dixon, Jamaica's 2000 US Collegiate Indoor champion, was fourth in 8.01 seconds, while other Jamaicans entered in the event were eliminated in heat two - Lacena Golding third in 8.03 seconds and Brigette Foster did not finish.

Haiti's Dudley Dorival (7.61) was fourth in the men's 60-metre hurdles won by American Anthony Dees in 7.52 seconds.

Campbell, the world's fastest over 200 metres this year, was only 0.01 seconds outside her season's best done in Birmingham last weekend, as she won with authority in 22.85 seconds.

Murielle Hurtis of France was second in 23.08, and Romania's Ionela Tirlea was third in 23.18 seconds.

And Campbell, the only sub-23-second runner so far this year, is now a clear favourite for 200 gold at the 8th World Indoor Championship in Portugal March 9-11.

Williams narrowly won the men's race, but was disqualified and Britain's Christian Malcolm claimed the win in 20.46, which by far betters his own world leading time of 20.58.

American Coby Miller (20.55) and Allyn Condon (20.72) of Britain, took second and third, respectively.

NIgerian Deji Aliu sped to a 6.55 triumph in the men's 60 metres, beating Americans Gregory Saddler (6.56) and Coby Miller (6.59), while Nigeria's Mercy Nku (7.11) won the women's equivalent over Bulgaria's Petya Pendareva (7.15) and Marina Kislova (7.19) of Russia.

Romania's Olympic 5,000-metre champion Gabriela Szabo continued her recent winning form with a 1,500 metres success in four minutes 3.42 seconds.
