Lambert leads way for St. Catherine


Ventura ... 5 for 27

ST. Catherine's captain Tamar Lambert highlighted play on the final day of their third round Rothmans Surrey Senior Cup cricket match at Chedwin Park yesterday with a chanceless 134 against St. Thomas.

Lambert guided St. Catherine to first innings points over the vistors in a match which produced the only two centuries of the round. On Saturday, former Jamaica player Brian Murphy slammed an unbeaten 125 for St. Thomas with the help of 17 fours and one six. Ironically, Murphy was bowled for a first ball duck by legspinner Odean Brown in the second innngs.

Lambert, meanwhile, cracked 19 fours and one six before he was caught by Murphy at mid-wicket off St. Thomas' skipper Dennis Gordon.

Elsewhere in the round, Kingston emerged the only team to gain an outright win, this against Tivoli at Sabina Park. They defeated the visitors by 119 runs to be joint leaders with Lucas (who drew a bye for this round) with 12 points.

Jamaica Defence Force gained first innings points from home team Kensington, as did defending champions Melbourne over Police at Elletson Road. At Folly Oval Portland gained first innings from Boys' Town.

AT CHEDWIN PARK: Scores - St. Thomas 243 (Brian Murphy 125 not out, Orlando Jemmeson 45; Oneil Richards 3 for 36, Curtis Francis 3 for 55, Bevon Brown 2 for 50) and 140 for eight (Kevin Murray 44, Paul Palmer 40, Hutton Sutherland 19, Dennis Gordon 11 not out; national youth legspinner Odean Brown 3 for 23, Oneil Richards two for 42).

St. Catherine 323 for five declared (Lambert 135, Danza Hyatt 70 with eight fours and a six, Curtis Francis 54 not out; Dennis Gordon 2 for 78, schoolboy pacer Jowayne Robinson two for 77.

Resuming at 105 for one, overnight batsmen Tamar Lambert and Danza Hyatt added a further 85 runs for the second wicket before Hyatt was trapped leg before by Dennis Gordon for 70. Lambert, however, found a useful partner in Curtis Francis and together they posted 69 runs for the third wicket. Lambert eventually went caught, but St. Catherine lost two quick wickets in Barrington Bartley Jr (17) and Bevon Brown (one) before the declaration was made at 1:40 p.m.

AT ELLETSON: Melbourne resumed yesterday on 119 for two with Aubrey Wollaston and Carlton Baugh Jr. on 52 and 23 respectively. Wollaston went on to make a top score of 92 while Baugh failed to add to his overnight score.

Scores Police 171 all out (Timmy Thomas 37, Everton Tabannah 30, Muehal Nelson 20; Conroy Miller 4-42, Sheldon Smith 2-21, Dwayne Cooper 2-21, Nikita Miller 2-43) and 161 all out (Thomas 49 not out, Nelson 35, Tabannah 29; Sheldon Smith 8-44) Melbourne 119 for two (Wollaston 92, Baugh Jr. 23; Kenute Asquith 5-33, Denville McKenzie 2-62, Chris Gordon 2-57) Melbourne needing to score 96 off 20 overs to win were struggling at 23 for four when badlight stopped play, with Jamaica pacer Danville McKenzie doing to damage picking up three for 11 off three overs.

AT KENSINGTON: Kensington and Jamaica Defence Force played to a draw.

AT SABINA PARK: Kingston beat Tivoli by 119 runs, thanks to match figures of eight for 39 by Jamaica paceman Audley Sanson and a five-wicket haul by Mario Ventura. Kingston 163 (Marvin McCain 45, Kerry Scott 27 not out, Michael Millwood 25; Gary Pink 7-57) and 184 for four (Nicholas Austin 69, Millwood 53 off 27 deliveries) Tivoli 103 (Alton Beswick 25; Audley Sanson 6-26) and 125 all out (K. Williamson 47; Mario Ventura 5-27, Sanson 2-13).
