A League teams dominate

THE dream runs of the parish champions came to an end yesterday in the second round of the Jamaica National/Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Federation Cup Knock Out.

Raiders, Catherine Hall, Tafari Lions and Bath yesterday had their flow halted by their more favoured A League rivals. Raiders lost 4-1 to Violet Kickers courtesy of four goals from Wilfred Smith while Tafari Lions were tamed 3-1 by Brazil.

Duhaney Park beat a leaking Bath 3-0 while Wadadah stopped Catherine Hall 2-0. In other games, Rivoli edged St George's 1-0, Galaxy beat Jamaica Defence Force 4-3 while Bull Bay halted Village 7-6 on penalties.

In the game of the day Olympic Gardens overcame a plucky Maverly to win 2-1 at Cling Cling Oval. It was a game which could have gone either way and Olympic Gardens owed their win to goalkeeper Kirk Porter who in addition to saving a penalty pulled off a number of brilliant saves from the little striker Locksley Thompson.

Olympic Gardens took the lead in the fourth minute through captain Tyrone Davis. Even with the lead in hand Olympic Gardens at times looked like a team playing catchup as the duo of Thompson and Marlon Lawrence were like a thorn in the side of the Olympic defence.

Maverly almost pulled level in the 23rd minute Lawrence got behind the defence down the right flank only to have his shot blocked on the line with an arm by defender Adrian Smith. Smith was duly issued with a yellow card and a penalty awarded. Captain Curtis Eledemire stepped up and steered the ball into the arms of Porter who moved to his left.

Maverly almost got their deserving equaliser in the 43rd minute from Andre Mclean who was set up with a free header just outside the six-yard box by Lawrence. He misdirected his header and deprived his team. He had to wait just one minute later when he followed up his own rebound and converted with the help of a deflection which deceived Porter.

Curtis Carter sealed the issue for his team in the 68th minute in between some fine saves from Porter.

AT HERBERT MORRISON: Fancied teams Wadadah and Violet Kickers advanced after wins over Catherine Hall and Raiders.

Wilfred Smith scored all four goals including a first half hat trick for Violet Kickers to hammer the St. Mary Division One team while Wadadah scored twice in the second half after a first half penalty miss to beat Catherine Hall in the St. James derby.

Smith ran his tally in the knock out competition to six goals after scoring twice in their first round 3-2 win over Los Perfectos in Mandeville last week.

Smith scored in the 29th 36th, 43rd and 54th minutes while Gary Banton scored a last minute penalty for Raiders.

Smith's first goal was the best of the lot as Smith started the move on the left with a nifty move to get around a defender on the touchline. He crossed the ball into the centre for Norman Foster who passed back to Winston Anglin who then passed to the left where Smith had positioned himself to shoot past Lanceford Gayle in the Raiders goal.

In the second game of the double header, struggling Premier League team Wadadah shrugged off a penalty miss in the second minute to beat a feisty Catherine Hall 2-0.

Oneil Thomas scored from the penalty spot in the 65th minute and Socrates Christie got the second in the 81st.
