Unbalanced article on Bush

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LAURA TANNA'S article was a very interesting review of the writings of Michael Foot. I gather from the report that Mr Foot writes from a liberal 'left wing' position so it was interesting to read what that side of the English political spectrum thinks of the world.

I was a little disappointed that the article did not live up to its billing "Michael Foot on Blair and Bush". As is normally the case, the article was slightly more factual concerning the positions and the (Blair) administration supported by Mr. Foot. When it came to the Bush administration the article left much to be desired. Unless of course, one is satisfied with invectives.

It would have been journalistically responsible to at least outline the facts of the stated Bush policy on nuclear disarmament before characterising them as 'worst'. And I certainly hope that the article Ms. Tanna read characterising the Bush team as "The Americans, who know least" was written before Mr. Bush chose Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice to head his National Security team.

The country's leading (liberal) media figures are agreed that the Bush team is more experienced than the outgoing Clinton administration. Surely, Ms. Tanna, the reading public would be better served by a factual outline of the "nonsense" that the Bush administration is "talking" as well the repetition of the left's favourite intellectual condescension.

This is not generally known, but Mr. Bush out-polled Mr. Gore by double digits among the university educated population in the country's election.

Bush's positions are all available for reading on the Internet.

I am etc.,
