Consulate poverty

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM a Jamaican national and a naturalised US citizen.

Recently, I telephoned the Jamaican Consulate in New York City to request a passport renewal form. I was informed by the receptionist to "send, us a stamped addressed envelope."

I simply wanted to exercise my right as a dual-citizen, as my intentions are to return to Jamaica. However, I was shocked to learn that the Consul General's Office cannot afford US$0.34 to mail the form. After discussing this with an associate, I further learned that the Consular's staff had been instructed to locate less expensive residences.

I hope Jamaicans will not be further embarrassed in the global society by the poverty of its Government overseas, when they are forced to live in sub-standard environments.

I am etc.,
