We can beat SA - Skerritt

Skerritt

ST JOHN'S, Antigua, CANA:

WEST Indies cricket team manager Ricky Skerritt is confident his side can beat South Africa, with two games remaining in the Cable and Wireless five-Test series.

Both teams arrived in Antigua on Tuesday about 20 minutes apart, three days ahead of the fourth Test match starting tomorrow at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG) which the South Africans enter with a 1-0 series lead.

"The captain has made it quite clear to the guys we are coming to Antigua to even the series," Skerritt said.

"South Africa are a very good team and it is not going to be easy but we are going to give it our best shot here and we have to turn the series around in this Antigua Test," he said.

The teams arrived a day after they fought out a tense draw in the third Test at the Kensington Oval in Barbados as South Africa retained their lead in the series for the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy.

Skerritt said the set back on Monday - in which they slumped to 88 for seven from 59 for one at one stage while chasing 265 to win - was another "wake up call" for his players.

"It wasn't the perfect way to end the Test having to ... hold on by the finger nails, so to speak," he said at the VC Bird airport.

"In a sense it was another wake up call for us that the South Africans are competitive every single ball.

"The key thing is that we earned a well deserved draw. We came back after allowing the South Africans to get over 400 (runs) in the first innings and we played a very competitive Test match as we did in Guyana and as we did up to the end of the fourth day in Trinidad.
