Why waste taxpayers' money?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

OVER the last two to three years the powers that be have wasted hundreds of millions of the taxpayers' money seeking for a flawless "voting system".

You cannot legislate honesty. Our problem in the system is not in technology, I think it is more "morality".

I worked in the system for 20 years between 1958 and 1978. I served as a presiding officer at different polling stations, several times under different regimes. Under the old system, voters came, went behind the screen, made their mark (after being identified as the person on the list); the presiding officer dropped the ballot in the box, the voter dipped his/her finger in the ink provided and left the station. At the end of the day a clean sheet when the votes are being counted.

We do not need a new system, we only need "new hearts". Why waste the taxpayers' money? For God's sake! Can't some sense prevail?

I am, etc.,
