Customs duties and a wheelchair

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WOULD like to respond to a letter published on April 30, 2001 entitled "Harsh experience at customs", by sharing a recent experience my family had last Easter.

We had a state-of-the-art wheelchair shipped from Florida Via TCX International. Upon arrival at Customs in Kingston it was handled by Deck Custom Brokers. They cleared the chair and delivered it to me. I was pleasantly surprised when they advised me that there was no duty charged, because there is no duty on wheelchairs.

In addition having explained the disabilities my child has, the shipper shipped it free of charge and the broker, likewise, gave their service free. The only charge paid was a document handling fee of less than $700.

Is it possible that it may have been some other person(s), who charged and collected the duties about which your letter writer wrote?

I am etc.,

ANTHONY MOYSTON
