College crowns beauty queen

Cleona Miller

MALVERN, St. Elizabeth:

CLEONA MILLER, 23, has been crowned the new Miss Bethlehem Moravian College 2001. Cleona is a second-year Primary Education student from Trelawny.

She also walked away with sectional prizes for being the most talented contestant, most culturally aware and most punctual, and was crowned by the out-going queen Nicola Cameron, also a second-year student.

The newly-crowned Miss Bethle-hem, who is a past student of Holmwood Technical High School in Christiana, Man-chester, wore the sash Miss Sea View Villa and was elegantly clad in a white satin dress.

Asked to respond to the question: 'Should Bob Marley be made Jamaica's 8th National Hero?', Cleona responded in the affirmative, noting that the Reggae icon has put Jamaica on the map through his music and that while he had not fought a physical war, the music he produced has won and continues to win many battles in the lives of persons not only in Jamaica, but across the world.

She noted also that the Reggae star is a household name in many countries around the world and that he is more widely known than any Prime Minister Jamaica has had.

Speaking with The Gleaner after the contest, Cleona said she will have to complete a project during her reign, as is expected by all students who wear the college's crown. Her project, she said, will be to put in place a weekly or fortnightly newsletter for her institution.

She also plans to have talks with the college's administration about replenishing its Mentor-ship programme, so that students can have more positive role models. She also intends to implement a 'Mr. Personality Contest' during her reign.

The first runner-up in the contest was Lotoya Orr, 19, a second-year student specialising in English and Social Studies. She wore the sash Miss Willowarie Garden.

Second runner-up was Andrea Clarke, 26, another second-year student specialising in English and Social Studies. She wore the sash Miss Property Market.
