Against the implementation of 'flexi-week'

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The implementation of flexi-week in Jamaica would be a huge mistake. The negative effects of such a system far outweigh the perceived positive effects. Weekend time would definitely be affected by such a system. Many Jamaicans use the weekends to socialise with friends and family, rest, go to market, worship, go to movies etc.

Flexi-week presents a scenario which would impinge greatly upon these activities and as a result there would be a breakdown in family life, church worship, friendships etc. Jamaicans already do not have enough leisure time and the weekends serve to make up for this.

Jamaica is sorely lacking in recreational facilities such as parks, playgrounds, zoos etc. What is needed is more such recreational facilities instead of more working hours. Flexi-week creates an inordinate imbalance between work and leisure. Leisure is an important aspect of any society and must never be taken for granted.
