Way to peace

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS IS to reply to the article by Dr. Alfred Sangster, dated May 16, 2001.

You write about the bad behaviour displayed by spectators at Sabina Park during the one-day match, W.I. versus South Africa and the complaint made by Mr. Hilaire Sobers.

You find it "ironic" that Mr. Sobers should complain about the incident since he is one of those Jamaicans who advocate the respect of the human rights of all Jamaicans.

I see nothing ironic in Mr. Sobers' predicament, and I am baffled by the reasoning behind your remarks.

It is illogical for you to imply that we must choose between opposing crime and opposing injustice. Any citizen can, without any inconsistency or insincerity, fully support the efforts of the police force and oppose all forms of crime and insist that every Jamaican has a right to equal treatment before the law.

This describes, I am sure, the motives of the members of Jamaicans for Justice, the Independent Jamaican Council for Human Rights, Families Against State Terrorism, and Amnesty International (Jamaica).

It is the right way for us to live together, and not only that, it is the only way by which, in the long-term, we will be able to restore peace in our society.

I am, etc.,
