Is it fair or fear competition?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Why is it that the phrase "fair competition" incites such fear in Jamaica that established companies seek to squeeze the life from up and coming competitors before they even get the chance to prove their worth?

The past and ongoing battles between Grace and Paymaster Ltd. shows how more established conglomerates try to bully new entities., and Cable and Wireless and Digicel illustrate that it is a constant struggle for new companies to find their niche in the market as their more established counterparts try to crush rather than compete.

The recent attack by the Jamaica Lotteries Company (JLC) on Win Jamaica Lotteries (WJL) proves that nothing has changed. Understandably, established businesses need not welcome competition with open arms, but the competition for market share should be won through the provision of quality products and marketing.
