Fire destroys two houses in St Mary

ANNOTTO BAY, St. Mary:

FIRE BELIEVED to have been started by a kerosene lamp, destroyed two houses on Friday evening at Esher District in St. Mary.

Owners of the houses Maxine Williams and Janice McLean said they were at a nearby shop when they saw smoke coming from one of the building.

The Annotto Bay fire brigade was notified, but they were unable to respond as they had no water.

One unit from the Port Maria station was only able to do cooling down operation as the buildings were engulfed by flames when they got there.

Loss has been estimated at $2.2 million for the two-bedroom house, and $3.2 million for the three-bedroom. Both were wooden structures, and the buildings were not insured.

One person was admitted to the Annotto Bay Hospital for minor injuries. Reports are that he was trying to save some of the household articles.

Friday's fire affected the lives of 13 persons, including six children.
