APOLOGY
IN an article headlined 'Sand bill unpaid after laying of track', which appeared in The Sunday Gleaner of July 1, 2001, we reported on certain allegations of impropriety made against the board of Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) by Vincent Edwards regarding the purchase of sand for the refurbishing of the racetrack from a quarry owner in St. Elizabeth. In the article, Danny Melville was described as the chairman of the board of CTL at the time.
The Gleaner is now satisfied that this was not so and that there was no proper foundation for the statement that Mr. Melville was chairman of CTL at the material time. In fact, we are now further satisfied that Mr. Melville had nothing whatsoever to do with the contract negotiations or the selection of the sand contractor for that project.
Accordingly, we unreservedly tender our apology to Mr. Melville for any embarrassment or inconvenience he may have suffered as a result of our said publication and unhesitatingly withdraw the allegations made therein against Mr. Melville.

Abel
CORRECTION
Dr. Wendel Abel was incorrectly identified, in a photograph which appeared in yesterday's Gleaner, as a member of the Jamaica Labour Party team which viewed the post-mortem at Madden's Funeral Home on Friday. Dr. Abel was at the post-mortem as a psychiatrist and independent observer. He was not a member of the JLP's team. We regret the error.
