Pagon appointed Jamaica under-19 captain

By Anthony A. Foster, Youth Writer

MELBOURNE's opening batsman Donovan Pagon has been appointed Captain of Jamaica's team that will participate in this Friday's start of the West Indies Under-19 cricket tournament in Guyana.

Pagon, a student at the Shell West Indies Cricket Academy in Grenada, will be appearing in his second regional Under-19 tournament. He will lead a side which includes 12 newcomers.

Xavier Marshall, a member of the West Indies World Cup Under-15 winning team in England last year, has also been included in the 14-man squad.

Meanwhile, two players from last year's team were omitted from the present squad. The players are Andre Rowe and Damion Grey. Andre Hall, a member of the West Indies Development team last year, also failed to make the team.

Chairman of selectors, Lindel Wright, said the three players were not selected because they did not perform up to standard during the trial matches.

First-timer Darren McTaggart was selected ahead of Rowe who took more wickets. However, Mr. Wright said that although Rowe got more wickets than MaTaggart he was not bowling better. He added that McTaggart had good pace and being a left arm pacer would add variety to the attack.

Regarding the overall team, Mr. Wright said: "I think we have a very composite and all-round team to play for Jamaica. I am satisfied that they will give a good account of themselves.

"In the past while representing their clubs they have performed creditably and I have no doubt they will continue in that vein. The rest of the selectors have no doubt that upon their selection our players will represent Jamaica with commitment and dignity."

The squad was selected after a three-day trial match between Buchanan's X1 and Ingram's X1 which ended in a draw at Sabina Park recently. The tournament was initially slated to begin August 3rd but was postponed due to heavy rainfall. The new date is this Friday, August 10.

THE SQUAD: Donovan Pagon (captain), Grerory Buchanan (vice-captain), Danza Hyatt, Shwan Findley, Lorenzo Ingram, Omar Campbell, Xavier Marshall, St. Clair Searchwell, Junior Stewart, Darren McTarggart, Craig Lynch, Wayne Simpson, Jowayne Robinson and Dwight Washington. Junior Bennett (coach) and Courtney Daley (manager). Reserves: Howard Powell, David Powell, Dwight Stewart and Shanielle Francis.
