WORK has begun on the Greater Portmore Sports Complex. The installation of the well and irrigation system is completed for watering of the football field, and grassing has commenced.
The development of Greater Portmore Sports Complex is being spearheaded by the MultiCare Foundation and is being managed by a committee drawn from the community associations in Portmore. Overall estimates for the completed project is J$75 million, but Phase 1 is expected to cost J$6.9 million.
The MultiCare Foundation and the Sports Development Foundation have jointly pledged J$1.5 million towards the project.
A series of fundraising events are being planned and will be launched shortly. Members of the Portmore community are being asked to give the project their full support.
Ground was broken on the complex in September last year by Dr. E. Karl Blythe, Minister of Water & Housing.
Construction of the project will be on a phased basis to enable the development of facilities as funding becomes available.
When completed, the complex is expected to include a football field, two multipurpose courts for playing volleyball, netball, basketball, hockey, a mondo track, a cricket pitch and tennis courts. The plans also include facilities for seating and parking and a caretaker's residence. West Indies Home Contractors (WIHCON) are the contractors for the project.
Modelled along the lines of the MultiCare's successful Breezy Castle Centre, the Greater Portmore Sports Complex is expected to become the centre of sporting activities in the area.
Main beneficiaries of the complex will be approximately 160,000 young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who live in Greater Portmore.
Established in 1993, the MultiCare Foundation is committed to youth and community development and is endowed by Cable and Wireless Jamaica Limited, Caribbean Cement Company Limited, and ICD Group Limited.
