THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE GOVERNMENT of Jamaica should not decriminalise ganja regardless of whose recommendation says so.
Jamaica does not need to be called the "ganja capital of the world". Jamaica does not need ganja to attract tourists that would generate millions of dollars, hence improve the economy. Jamaica does not need tourists or Jamaicans to come to Jamaica to get ganja to export for distribution and sale to other countries.
Jamaica does not need any more problems. Jamaica does not need to weaken her economy which would lead to more hardship for the poor. Jamaica does not need to harm and destroy people's brain. Jamaica needs a sane society. Jamaica does want to encourage nor foster corruption. Jamaica does not want to magnify corruption because we have enough of that.
For example, 'dons' making political contributions towards political campaigns. If Jamaicans are obeying the laws of the country, why should they be concerned about decriminalisation. I am not implying that the greater percentage of Jamaicans are law-abiding people, but I am just making a point. What is the main motive behind decriminalising ganja? What is wrong with the current Government of Jamaica?
My recommendation to the Government of Jamaica is to focus their energy on crime and tribalism.
This is where their effort is most needed and this is where all governments of Jamaica effort will be for a long time to come; not on decriminalisation of ganja.
