GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CANA:JAMAICA and holders Windward Islands played to a tame draw in their fourth round West Indies youth championship match at the LBI Community Centre yesterday.
Windwards, who were set 195 runs to win after Jamaica declared their second innings at 186 for five at tea, were 73 for one in their second innings when the match ended with 10 of the final 15 overs completed.
Opening batsmen Gavin Roberts and Gaspard Prosper, who fell to off-spin bowler Wayne Simpson for 26, shared an opening stand of 61 to deny the Jamaicans any thoughts they might have harboured of bowling out their opponents in the minimum 30 overs possible to the close.
Jamaica remain at the top of the championship table with 32 points along with Trinidad & Tobago, who drew with Leeward Islands.
Earlier, consistent batting by the Jamaicans also thwarted any hopes Windwards had of earning a come-from-behind victory and to bring them back into contention for the Championship.
Windwards made two early strikes when they got rid of overnight pair Gregory Buchanan and Danza Hyatt, both falling to off-spin bowler Shane Shillingford to leave the Jamaicans 48 for four.
An 81-run, fifth-wicket stand between Lorenzo Ingram and Xavier Marshall took their team out of a sticky position however.
The partnership was eventually broken when Shillingford, who ended with four wickets for 46 runs from 34 overs, bowled Marshall for 43, an innings which included five fours in just over 2 1/2 hours off 180 balls.
Ingram, who also remained unbeaten on 43 when the declaration came, then shared an unbeaten 49-run, sixth-wicket stand with the hard-hitting St. Clair Searchwell, who clouted a six and four fours in his 42 not out which came in 50 minutes off 50 balls.
Ingram's knock contained two fours in just less than four hours off 176 balls.
