By Glenroy Sinclair, Staff Reporter

ANGRY RESIDENTS of Seaward Drive in Olympic Gardens, St. Andrew, yesterday attacked and smashed several vehicles at the Tank-Weld Metals plant, following the death of a man who was pinned beneath pieces of heavy metal pipes on the compound earlier in the morning.

The protesters charged that 27-year-old Warren Brown also of a Seaward Drive address was not killed in an accident as initially reported. They claimed that his death was orchestrated by co-workers. Managing Director John Ralston later told a group gathered outside the plant that the management would be probing all the allegations made by the protesters.

Earlier, the boisterous protesters, who mounted roadblocks outside the gates, set fire to two trucks belonging to the company and hurled stones at vehicles entering the compound, including that of a senior manager reporting for work. The windscreens of 14 trucks were also smashed.

A female employee, who only yesterday started her first day on the job as canteen concessionaire, was grazed by a bullet, reportedly fired from among the protesters.

The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported that Mr. Brown was killed at about 4:15 a.m. in an accident. He was reportedly loading metal pipes onto an industrial crane when they apparently slipped and fell on him, pinning him to the ground. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

One of Brown's relatives later told reporters that the management of Tank-Weld had invited them to a meeting yesterday morning and proposed to finance his funeral. "They (managers) promised to meet with us again," said the relative.

The irate residents claimed Mr. Brown was the third person to have died over the past four years at the plant.
