HEALTH PROVIDER, Blue Cross of Jamaica awarded 12 scholarships to children of subscribers to the Blue Cross Plan and the Government Employees' Administrative Scheme Only (GEASO).

The awards were presented recently at a ceremony at the Caenwood Centre auditorium in Kingston and are based on performance in the recent Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT). Each scholarship is valued at $10,000 annually over a five-year period, and is tenable at government grant-aided high schools.

The awardees were Holly Banton and Khaesha Hall who will attend Campion College, Kemoy Williams and Tafari Mitchener who will attend Ardenne High, Rachel Coore and Jadine Knight who will move to St. Andrew High, Kayla Blake to Immaculate Conception, Sudonie Johnson and Fiona Turner to Mannings High, Camile Clarke to Manchester High, Tahlia Wright to Hampton School, and D'Andrea Lewars to Westwood High.

At the same time, several other students who received scholarship in previous years had their grants renewed. Scholarships were also granted to employees' children ranging from basic school to tertiary levels.

The students are required to maintain high averages and good conduct for full maintenance of the scholarships.

To date, the company has distributed 100 scholarships valued at over $7.5 million, and $10 million in other assistance under its Community Outreach Programme.

In keeping with its focus on health care, Chief Executive Officer of Blue Cross, Dr. Henry Lowe, announced plans by Blue Cross to undertake research on the impact of and implication of violence on children in certain school communities. The University of the West Indies will partner Blue Cross in this initiative.
