In praise of helpful politicians

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WOULD like to take this time to thank the local government in Clarendon, Jamaica. In January 2001, I was in Jamaica conducting a research on a mining operation in Clarendon. Mr. Charles Learmond and Mr George R. Lyn, who are both Members of Parliament were very helpful in the success of my research.

I must also extend my gratitude to Miss Marie Bisasoo, Councillor of NC Clarendon, who took time from her busy schedule to assist me while I was in the country. They illustrated that politicians are not self-serving individuals as many critics perceive them as, but people whose existence is to help others.

As a college student, I have noticed that not many people will 'bend over backwards' to help others. Their sincerity is but a reflection of genuine commitment to serve the public. I am very thankful for their assistance and I hope that the rest of the Jamaican government is as helpful and kind-hearted as the local government in Clarendon.

I am etc.,
