The currency and braille

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I RECENTLY visited the offices of a public utility, where I observed a blind person asking the assistance of other customers in identifying the denomination of various notes of currency. As I often use the raised type on notes to identify valid currency, it struck me that it should be possible to print the denomination on these notes in Braille.

I am not aware of this practice in any other country, but I fail to see why a precedent cannot be set in Jamaica. It would certainly assist our visually impaired compatriots in handling their own finances and would serve as yet another deterrent to counterfeiters.
