Long Hill road under investigation

WESTERN BUREAU:

THE LONG Hill road in Reading, St. James is up for repairs and an investigation is under way to determine why it is deteriorating.
This is according to Stephen Shaw, community relations officer for the National Works Agency (NWA) in response to concerns that the road is becoming unsafe and hazardous.

"The road is sinking," Pamela Campbell, president of the Mafoota Citizens' Association and a leading advocate calling for repairs on the road, told The Gleaner on Tuesday. "Our people use it all the time and we are concerned about their safety. It is very bad," she noted.

A bus driver from Savanna-la-Mar, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that motorist have to use the right side of the road to avoid potholes, increasing the potential for an accident. "It is not good, man," he noted.

The Long Hill road connects Montego Bay to many parts of southwestern Jamaica, including the town of Savanna-la-Mar and the popular Black River Safari. Road users have been complaining that it has been sinking for some time and nothing has been done about it.

They also complained that the retaining wall along many parts of the road is crumbling and falling into disrepair, further endangering the lives of those who travel on the road.

However, Mr. Shaw said that repairs are forthcoming under the National Road Improvement Programme. He added an investigation has been launched in order to determine why the road is sinking.

"Mobilisation to start the work has already commenced," he said.
