WEST INDIES opener Chris Gayle extended the outstanding form he showed in the recent tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya with a century at Up Park Camp yesterday.
Gayle hit a solid 140 to guide Surrey B to first innings points over leaders Surrey A in the feature Jamaica County Cricket Championship match. Scores: Surrey A 239; Surrey B 287 for five when play was called off.
Surrey A, despite losing first innings points to Surrey B, are still leading the standing with 13 points from three games.
Melbourne who just failed in their bid to take maximum points from Cornwall are next on nine points, they are followed by Surrey B on seven, Cornwall four and Middlesex two.
Gayle featured in two important partnerships after resuming on 17. With Wayne Cuff (37) he added 76 for the third wicket before he and Anthony Folkes (41 not out) put on 90 for the fourth.
After spending almost the entire day at the wicket, Gayle was finally out caught by Kevin Peart on the long-off boundary of Bevon Brown after a polished innings which was full of beautiful strokes. The West Indies Test player faced 193 deliveries and hit 21 fours in an innings which lasted for 280 minutes.
When both captains decided to call off the match Folkes 41 and Mark Gray 16 were the not out batsmen. Brown finished with three for 77 from 18 overs and Phillip Keating the most economical bowler with one for 41 off 23 overs.
AT SABINA PARK: Despite a fighting knock of 107 not out from Tyson Gordon Middlesex surrendered first innings points to Kingston in their drawn match.
Scores: Kingston 285 and 19 for one; Middlesex 217.
Middlesex were set back early yesterday. West Indies player Leon Garrick (4) and David Harrison (2) were out with only five runs on the board. Harrison went leg before wicket to Sadique Phillips and four runs later Garrick went in a similar fashion to Dwight Mais.
Gordon then took the attack to the Kingston bowlers and shared in a 99-run fourth wicket partnership with Holmwood schoolboy David Powell who got 37. The 19-year-old Gordon batted right throughout his innings just to see wickets falling around him at the other end. He faced 163 deliveries and hit nine fours and three sixes off Kerry Scott in his 233-minute stay at the crease. Edward Llewelyn 16, Corey Phillips 15 and Barrington Brown were the only other batsmen to get into double figures. Jamaica pacer Mais took five for 56 from 17 overs and Phillips, playing the supporting role, ended with four for 41 off 12 overs.
