Terrorists offer no hope

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PEOPLE LIKE Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, and other anti-US, anti-Israeli leaders around the world have nothing to offer but death and destruction, all wrapped up in religion.

Their beef with America is not so much what America or even Israel has done to them they hate America for what it is. America is a country where anyone can go and find a better way of life. The throngs of Jamaicans at the US Embassy remain a testimony to that.

For all its imperfections, America still remains a beacon of hope for every other people seeking to better themselves. Does anyone believe bin Laden can provide a society like America's? Does anyone believe that he will prosper in a country ruled by such as he? No! Terrorists like him can only produce a society from which his own fellow Arabs and Muslims would flee and flee to America!

It's far easier, isn't it, to train Arabs to fly planes so that they can crash them into skyscrapers, than to train them to build such structures in the countries they were recruited from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and who knows where else. Far easier, isn't it, to teach young men to strap bombs onto themselves and detonate it on a bus, a restaurant, or a dance hall, than to teach them to be doctors, farmers, and machinists. Far easier to teach people how to destroy the society of another than to learn how to build one's own.

It wouldn't surprise me to see, on September 11, 2011, a fully-rebuilt, fully refurbished, fully occupied, and fully-operational World Trade Centre.

It wouldn't surprise me because that's what Americans are capable of they can rebuild what's been torn down. After World War 2, the Americans helped rebuild Europe even Germany and Japan, which American bombs had reduced to ashes. So rebuilding WTC is no impossible feat. But as for the countries that harbour terrorists, that sponsor terrorism as a means to enhance themselves do they think their countries will be improved by that time?

I am etc.,
