BRENTON Parchment and Marlon Samuels scored half centuries for Robert Samuel's X1 to defeat Nehemiah Perry's X1 by two wickets in the first of five trial matches to select Jamaica Red Stripe Bowl team at Melbourne Oval yesterday.
Scores: Perry's X1 261 for six off 50 overs; Robert Samuel's X1 262 for eight from 48.4 overs.
Batting first, Perry's X1 got off to a very good start with West Indies players Chris Gayle and Leon Garrick posting 133 runs for the first wicket. The two played some beautiful strokes off the opening pace bowlers Darren Powell (10 overs for 45 runs) and Warren Medwynter (six overs for 32 runs).
After waiting so long without a wicket, Samuels introduced Gareth Breese into the attack and immediately the off-spinner got the job done. He got the wickets of Gayle, caught and bowled for 78 (12x4 1x6) and Donovan Pagon, caught by captain Samuels without scoring with successive deliveries.
Perry's X1 slipped into further trouble when out of form Ricardo Powell was run out for zero.
Garrick who batted well for his 90 runs was eventually caught and bowled by Breese at 192 for five, his innings 12 fours and a six..
Other useful scores came from David Bernard Jr. (47 nought out) and Keith Hibbert (25). Breese took four for 42 from his 10 overs and Marlon Samuels one for 24 off four overs.
When Robert Samuels XI replied Parchment and Mel Wint put on 55 for the first wicket.
After losing Wint (17) and Wavel Hinds (9) to the bowling of legspinner Phillip Keating, Marlon Samuels then struck a run-a-ball 64, which included eight fours and a six before he went to Dwight Mais at 198 for five, while Parchment led the way with a well played 82 with 10 fours and two sixes off 89 balls to set the stage for victory.
In the end, Wayne Cuff (29 not out) and Bevon Brown (two not out) got required runs with eight balls to spare, as Keating took three for 55 and Jermaine Lawson two for 50.
