Unbeaten Alston take on Holmwood

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

ALSTON COMPREHENSIVE could become the first team to win four games in the Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup this afternoon when they take on Holmwood Technical in a Zone G game in Christiana.

After winning just two games last year and failing to advance past the first round, Alston have so far won three games to be the pacesetters. Holmwood on the other hand, quarter-finalists last season, are still searching for their first win after three games.

Six games are scheduled for today.

In Christiana, Alston will be hoping to not just avenge two big losses to the traditional zone powerhouses but will be seeking their first goal against them. Last season Holmwood won by scores of 4-0 and 9-0 but even a draw today would be a bonus for new coach Dave Anderson.

Second place Aabuthnott Gallimore are also seeking to establish themselves after sitting out last season and winning just two games the previous one. Today they start favourites debutants Mile Gully at home and should stay within touching distance of the leaders.

Aabuthnott Gallimore are coming off a loss to leaders Alston but should be strong enough to get by Mile Gully who are yet to earn a point.

In Zone F, leaders Denbigh will be bracing for the expected onslaught from Bellefield who are coming off a 13-1 demolition of newcomers Cross Keys on Tuesday.

Denbigh lead the zone with six points from three games but there are four more teams within two points including second placed Porus who are on five points and will be away to Cross Keys.

In Tuesday's goal-feast, Cleon Barrett scored five times, Chadrick Morgan had three while Gary Roach and Clayton Berry each scored twice.

TODAY'S GAMES

Zone F: Cross Keys vs Porus, Manchester vs May Day, Denbigh vs Bellefield.

Zone G: Christiana vs Spalding, Holmwood vs Alston, Aabuthnott Gallimore vs Mile Gully.
