By Paul A. Reid, Staff ReporterWESTERN BUREAU - Anchovy Comprehensive High's brilliant start to the Pepsi/Sports Plus daCosta Cup season was cut short yesterday after discovered they had used an ineligible player.
Anchovy's coach Orville Sancroft told the Gleaner last night that they had inadvertently breached the repeat rule after they used goalkeeper Triston Bernard who was starting his third year in 11th grade.
Sancroft told the Gleaner that Bernard had dropped out of school in his first year in 11th grade and had not played any sports up to this year. The coach said he had hoped that the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) would have viewed this case as a special one as they had not gone out to deliberately break any rules.
Sancroft said the players were very upset when they heard the news and he was working on keeping them focussed on their schoolwork for the remainder of the year.
Efforts to contact officials of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) also proved futile.
Anchovy are coming off an upset 1-0 win over many time champions Rusea's on Saturday and was on top of the points standings with 14 points. All their results will be struck from the records.
In one game played yesterday, Zone D leaders Cedric Titus conceded their first goal of the season after they held on for a 1-1 draw against Ferncourt in their rescheduled game at Clarks Town in Trelawny.
Lennie Wilson had given the home team the lead after just 11 minutes when he powered home from close range but Ferncourt's captain Marco Beckford equalised in the 78th after a sustained period of dominance by the St. Ann team.
Despite the result, Cedric Titus stayed on top of the points standings with 14 points while Ferncourt slipped by Browns Town for second place on 12 points.
Meanwhile 12 more games are scheduled for this afternoon with the Zone F clash between joint leaders Bellefield and Porus, being the featured one.
Both teams are on 14 points and unbeaten after six games with four wins and two draws, each. Their first round encounter also ended in a 1-1 deadlock.
The schools are also coming off good wins over the weekend and with a resurgent Manchester High nipping at their heels three points back in third place, will be seeking to separate themselves from the other teams in the zone.
