Nico Taylor busily readying her stall
ALTHOUGH Nico Taylor is just 21-year-old, she has almost 10 years experience as a vendor.
Nico, who describe herself as a self-reliant and independent woman, has been selling in the Papine Market since she was 13.
"I use to come here with my aunt Miss Little (Ruby Anderson) after school," the former Holy Trinity High School student said. She said she took up selling full time in 1997 after her aunt died.
The Allman Town, Kings-ton resident said she learnt a lot by selling beside her aunt. "I learn how to deal with customer and how to depend on myself," Nico said.
These skills, which she honed over the years, have helped to guide her as a food vendor. Nico, who is very courteous, seems to get along well with her colleagues and customers.
Nico, a mother of a one-year-old daughter, said she would not give up market life for anything, as it gives her a feeling of self-worth. "I learn from watching my aunty that if you work for yourself it is better," she said.
Her greatest fear about seeking employment is "when it come on to pay day the boss come tell you bull when him suppose to pay you".
Nico, who sells in the market from Monday to Saturday, said she has to work long hours. "I don't have any special time when I leave. Anytime we ready we pack up and leave," she said.
If there is one thing she has got out of being a vendor, it is being able to depend on herself and that, she said, she will pass on to her daughter.
