National Awards ceremony

EVEN AS we remember the heroes who have passed, Jamaica will honour those of the present on National Heroes' Day.

On Monday, October 15, Jamaican stalwarts from all walks of life will cross the lush grounds of Kings House to accept their honours from Governor-General Sir Howard Cooke. There will be teachers, sportsmen, policemen, artists, politicians, doctors, soldiers and persons of no lauded profession who have earned the right to stand tall before the nation.

With the gallant men of the colour guard and the customary elegant dresses of the ladies adding a dash of excitement, the ceremony provides the perfect opportunity for Jamaicans to celebrate the very best of ourselves.

And it also provides the public the opportunity of a first-hand view, as the ceremony is open to the public.

Among those to be honoured -- Doris Veronica Brown, a veteran school administrator who has given 45 years to the education sector. She will receive the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer.

Byron Blake, who gave 30 years to Caribbean Community (CARICOM) secretariat will receive the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander, as will Arnold Ventura, special adviser to Prime Minister P.J. Patterson.
