Producers Group chairman clears the air

CHAIRMAN OF the Jamaica Producers Group, Charles Johnston, has flatly denied allegations in the Financial Gleaner yesterday, that he was involved in the selection of the Danish company, A.P. Moler, to operate and manage Kingston's trans-shipment port.

"I am most upset at the comments made about me in the Financial Gleaner," he said in a letter yesterday.

Mr. Johnston said: "I have been a board member of Kingston Wharves, Kingston Terminal Operators and the Port Authority for at least 10 years. During this time I have always supported Kingston Wharves and Kingston Terminal Operators' positions at the Port Authority of Jamaica.

"I did not sit on the selection committee of the Port Authority and had no part whatsoever in the decision process which appointed A.P. Moler the preferred bidder.

"Subsequent to A.P. Moler's appointment as the preferred bidder, I was approached by Mr. Hylton Clarke of A.E. Parnell to join his local consortium, the terms of which are still being negotiated."
