Do or die for JC, Wolmer's

By Melton Williams, Staff Reporter

NOTHING LESS than a victory can save former champions Jamaica College and Wolmer's High today.

Both teams will launch desperate bids against out-of-contention teams to qualify for the semi-final round of the 2001 Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup in their final second-round games.

JC, who are second in Group One, face struggling Kingston College in the first game of a doubleheader at Ferdie Neita Park, Braeton at 1:30 and joint Group Two second-placed team Wolmer's challenge bottom-placed Camperdown at 3:30.

In a round where the three group winners and the best second-placed finisher will advance, JC and Wolmer's best hope is to finish on six points and then await the result of tomorrow's final set of games to know their fates.

Jonathan Grant performed giantkilling acts against JC and KC to move ahead in Group One on six points and only need a draw against outgoing champions Norman Manley to advance as the group winners.

In Group Two, Spanish Town Comprehensive lead with four points, one ahead of Wolmer's and Holy Trinity while the team of the moment, Bridgeport Comprehensive, and Charlie Smith are tied for first place on points in Group Three. Both teams have six points, however Bridgeport are ahead courtesy of a better goal average.

With the sticky position that JC and Wolmer's are in, desperation has set in knowing that only victory will be good enough.

JC's coach, Glen Laing, said he hoped to take advantage of a wounded KC team who were sent packing after a 4-1 whipping by Jonathan Grant on Tuesday. "We want to score early and get on top of them," said Laing who is hoping to qualify as the best second-place team. On paper, Group Three is in the best position to walk away with the best second-place qualifier.

"I guess KC are not in the best of spirits after their chances went through the door on Tuesday but there's always a rivalry so they are still coming to play."

Winston McCallum, coach of Wolmer's, said "it's a knockout for us".

"If we don't win, we're out. That's the approach we're taking. Our first objective is to win and score as many goals as possible."
