THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE POLICE must be highly commended for their recent effort in the massive gun and ammunition find. A combination of quick intelligence gathering and immediate proactive action were responsible for the success of the police in this matter.
It is quite clear that the massive traffic in guns and ammunition, and their twin brother cocaine, has taken on sophisticated proportions in which upscale communities are increasingly being featured. So-called upstanding citizens seem to be at the centre of what is taking place.
I am happy to know that the police have begun to recognise the nexus between citizens in these communities and these nefarious activities. For too long the poor in depressed communities are targeted for criminal behaviour while the real criminals roam freely in their laces, Lexuses and other trappings of filthy lucre. It has become quite clear that the police need and indeed deserve the help of every law-abiding citizen of Jamaica, both at home and abroad.
Jamaica is not an easy society to police. It has become in recent years even more difficult to do so as the police are battling against tremendous forces of evil and deception, even in their own ranks. We should recognise the dangerous environment in which they operate to protect many of those who are apt to criticise them when they do wrong, but become studiedly silent when they do a good deed. We cannot condone the wrongs that they commit, but let us also be consistent in our praise when they bravely perform a good deed.
I am, etc.,
Rev. RALSTON NEMBHARD
