THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE GLOWING tributes paid to their respective Dons by PNP and JLP representatives confirms, if confirmation was necessary, that our politicians willingly sacrifice principle on the altar of populism.
They forget that the enjoyment of constitutional rights to life and freedom are abrogated not only by the policeman who carries out a summary execution or detains without reasonable cause for extended periods but also by the Don carrying out 'ghetto justice' or confining persons in a chicken coop.
The conduct of each is despicable and stands to be condemned by all who support the rule of law. Only respect for the rule of law and punishment of those who break it will ensure justice and peace in Jamaica.
Our dilemma is, what do we do when all around in positions of leadership seem unable or unwilling to do that which is right regardless of its unpopularity.
The words of Norman Manley speaking in Parliament in 1961 are appropriate:
".....it is not the Constitution that preserves these rights.....it is the spirit of the people. It is the vigilance of the people; it is the public opinion, and its constant awareness of itself; and it is the quality of the leadership that exists."
I am, etc.,
