Lara injured, Windies lose

- Reuters

West Indies star batsman Brian Lara gestures to the dressing room for help moments after his on-pitch collision with Sri Lanka's Marvan Atapattu during the triangular one-day tournament at Asgiriya Stadium yesterday.

KANDY, Sri Lanka, (Reuters):

BRIAN LARA dislocated his left elbow after a nasty collision with a fielder in the West Indies eight wicket triangular series defeat by Sri Lanka yesterday.

Team manager Ricky Skerritt said: "There is no break (but) he has been advised to have his hand in a cast for at least two weeks."

Lara will miss the rest of the tour which ends on Wednesday but officials hope he will be fit for the tour of Pakistan, starting next month.

Skerritt added: "As of now, there are no plans either to move him from the ... hospital, except to put him in the team's hotel, nor do we have any plans of sending him home. I have not thought that far."

Lara collided with Marvan Atapattu at the non-striker's end. Lara had set off for a quick single and Atapattu, fielding the ball at cover, ran in to throw the wicket down. The players collided and Lara was left clutching his arm in agony.

Lara was on 24 at the time with score on 60 for one in the 11th over. Although the West Indies managed to muster 235 thanks to 72 from Carl Hooper and 52 from Daren Ganga, Sri Lanka swept to victory in 43.1 overs.

Mahela Jayawardene's 106 not out was his sixth one-day international century.

His unbeaten stand of 187 with Atapattu (82) cemented Sri Lanka's place in Wednesday's final. West Indies meet Zimbabwe today for the right to meet the Sri Lankans.
